Mission Statement:
The German Club, founded in 2004, aims to promote German-American cross-cultural awareness at McDaniel College and in the surrounding community. Club activities focus on learning the language and participating in cultural activities.
Membership:
The club currently has twenty active members but welcomes anyone interested in Germany and its culture. Knowing the language is not required in order to participate! The club meets every other Thursday (twice per month) in the basement of Big Baker Chapel, Room 101 at 7:00 pm, to discuss upcoming events.
Activities and Events:
- German-American Day: Hundreds of students from nearby high schools visit McDaniel College. Professors, McDaniel students and professionals with German-related careers give lectures and lead workshops for students. Students are also offered German food and are encouraged to participate in German songs.
- German Society of Maryland Awards Banquet: The society holds a formal banquet to recognize the achievements of teachers, students and distinguished individuals in Maryland's German-speaking community. Traditional German cuisine, song and dance are offered as well.
- German Immersion Weekend: Language students only! Students participate in a weekend retreat where German is exclusively spoken, giving students the opportunity to practice their skills.
- Oktoberfest: Blob's Park in Maryland is a German beer garden and hosts Oktoberfest celebrations every year. Students have the chance to try authentic German beers, as well as traditional German food.
