Firsthand experience is often more effective as a learning tool than direct information. Portal teaches fundamental concepts simply by showing them within their proper context, leaving it up to the players to assign them useful meanings.
Portals Are Never Defined
The game is built around this central conceit, and yet GlaDOS never says what a portal exactly is. Instead, during the game’s opening sequence, a portal simply materializes in front of players. As they examine it and move through it, they realize that it is simply a door to another point in the environment. This solidifies the concept better than verbal explanation.
Observation is Key
When players encounter other strange objects in the game world, they must divine for themselves what they mean and how they are used. Usually, this is accomplished through contextual clues in the environment, thus establishing observation and interpretation as key to success.
Understanding the Design Grammar
As players learn the game, they build knowledge of its design grammar, the interlocking relationship between its parts. For instance, when players figure out how to manipulate buttons and boxes, this skill becomes part of their repertoire and can be applied to increasingly complex tasks.
